The amazing Rainbow Beach – which is located 239 kilometres (149 mi) from Brisbane, but only 75 kilometres (47 mi) from Gympie – is famed and named for its amazing rainbow-coloured sand dunes, which surround the coastal town. In fact, the origin of Rainbow Beach can be attribute to this amazing sand, as it began its life as a sand mining town!

These days, visitors flock to this unique area to see and learn about the colourful sand dunes, which occur because of the rich mineral content – such as ilmenite, monazite rutile and zircon. They also come just to enjoy the pristine beaches, clean, clear rolling surf and surrounding lush rainforests. Other attractions within the area include the scenic Carlo Sand Blow, the unspoilt Cooloola National Park, delightful Inskip Point, the tea-coloured Poona Lake, the amazing vantage point of Double Island Point Lighthouse and many other natural and manmade features. Wildlife lovers will be thrilled to see dolphins, dugongs, turtles, sharks and a variety of other marine creatures, as well as small mammals, birds and reptiles.

There are so many things to do at Rainbow Beach, the best being to simply relax on the beautiful beaches, swim in the clear water and slowly explore all of the fascinating features. You can also go for a surf on the longest surf break in Australia, enjoy scuba diving and snorkelling, try your luck with some fishing, horse ride along beautiful trails, explore the National Park, 4WD On the beach or do some birdwatching.

Young or old, seeking a thrill or just hoping for a relaxing weekend – whatever your leisure preferences, Rainbow Beach has you covered!
